Whether it's staging a home for resale or designing a bathroom upgrade, there's no doubt you'll be faced with a myriad of choices. What kinds of products are available and which ones to choose are some of the key decisions you'll need to make with any sort of home upgrade.

The quandary is where to start with your home designs.

Arming yourself with information is a good first step but too much of that can result in information overload. "That's where a lot of people get hung up" says Rob Levesque, founder of the home design website HomeStyleChoices.com. "Most of us approach a kitchen or bath upgrade with some ideas in mind but often run afoul when it comes to getting specific and making product choices" says Rob. "Or" he adds, "it's not even knowing what products are out there that can do the job, solve the problem, or achieve the desired look."

One way around this dilemma is to break down the project into pieces, in order to make it more manageable. Those "pieces" involve asking yourself some questions about what you want as an end result, determining what your budget is and then targeting products and services that help you meet those ends.Take a bathroom upgrade for example. Ask yourself what it is you want from that upgrade. Is it greater flexibility, perhaps to accommodate aging individuals? Or is it a face lift, in order to stage the home and make it ready for sale? Once you've identified what it is you want from those objectives, you'll be better prepared to go after products that flesh out that design."It's great when you become aware of a product or service that really hits the target on meeting your design or style objectives" says Rob, "but that's not the end of it." Rob says that with every product choice there are usually some considerations that should be thought about before you make a final decision. It's those 'I hadn't thought of that' tidbits that sometimes help you over the hurdle of making a decision on one product or another.

For example, bathroom vanities come in several heights. Shorter vanities might be uncomfortable for taller individuals because of having to stoop lower to use the sink. Or, installing a vanity top made from those cool small mosaic tiles might be a great style departure but having to clean the kids' toothpaste out of all those grout lines might be a real pain."It's all about learning what's out there, finding out what you like and then considering the plusses and minuses. That's the purpose behind HomeStyleChoices.com" says Rob. "It's basic mission is 'presenting choices and helping you choose'."
